The History of the Ring Generals
The Ring Generals (RG) clan has a long and proud history. Some will say that RG was born offline, but this will tell of the history of the clan online. It was sometime around mid to late December 2004 that a post was made on Gamefaqs by Y2Jeremy about a “golden opportunity”. He put out a call for the most elite players to join him in showing the online community how “skilled players” play. He specifically asked for those people that he had played in the tournaments that had been held by various people in the previous months. These people for the most part exemplified the best that the online world had to offer at the time. Y2Jeremy set a time and place for recruiting to take place and on that day the newly formed RG went out for their “first night on the town”. RG poured into rooms and cleaned them out. Everyone was called out and everyone was defeated. Clans that had been unopposed since they formed were all of a sudden broken and dispersed. Thus RG stepped into the spotlight and set the tone for what skill was and became the measuring stick for what a clan truly could be.
RG continued to grow as more and more skilled players flocked to it. Tournaments continued to be held and new talent was unearthed. RG's ranks swelled. To meet the overwhelming power of RG, several new clans popped up to oppose them. Most of them broke up after being defeated by RG and their names are forgotten in the passing of time. One clan however emerged out of several clans that were determined to bring RG down. That clan was known as “Mafia”. Led by a prominent and respected player of the online world, Mafia made a formal declaration of war on RG by way of Gamefaqs. They swore to bring down the juggernaut that was RG. So began a new kind of war. One that was not only waged on the game, but on message boards as well. Daily, people would go to Gamefaqs to see the latest developments in the RG/Mafia war. Challenges were made, wars ensued on the game and no clear winner was emerging. Flame wars grew more intense and that intern fueled some of the greatest matches seen yet on the game. Some time passed without a clear winner. Eventually RG showed its stability by outlasting Mafia. Mafia began to to fall to infighting and attacks from enemies they had picked up along the way. While RG stood strong, Mafia failed and its members dispersed back to their respective clans. In this way, RG survived its first great challenge.
After the Mafia war and the relative period of peace that followed, RG began to look inward and address the quality and fairness of its players. A new website was created for RG and the clan was able to really get together and consolidate. Gamefaqs was left behind and RG faded a little from the limelight of that public forum. Several members were being accused of cheap and cheating tactics. Y2Jeremy and other more prominent members of RG began to “clean house”. Members were released and new, cleaner talent was found to replace them. Rules were put in place for the first time and the members started to become a tighter group. It was decided that it was time for RG to focus more on skill and fairness then the outdated “win at all costs” attitude that was and still is very common online. Most of the members were able to make the change and those that couldn't were left behind. Some members left and others joined and RG became richer for it. It was decided that members needed to be evaluated before being allowed to join. Thus the little rg's were created. This was designed to be a kind of training and probation period for potential members. When it was decided that they had “earned their stripes” so to speak, they were brought up to the big show. While this was going on, people on the game and saw the glamor of RG and tried to emulate it. Some rose up to challenge RG and some simply stayed out of its way and kept the peace. One clan however began to come together during this time.
Unknown and unseen by RG, the 4 Horseman rose somewhat out of the ashes of Mafia by assimilating some of its better players into their ranks. Dubbing themselves “The Horseman” (HM) they began a rise to power of their own. As their numbers swelled so did their popularity. With a site of their own and just as cohesive as RG, it was inevitable that RG and HM were going to collide. All it would take was a spark and that spark came in the form of a prominent RG member having a match against the HM leader and talking about it on Gamefaqs. The HM leader had a reputation of being nearly unbeatable and denied being beaten by that RG member. So it was that in early February 2005 that the first shots were fired in the RG/HM war. Flame wars ensued on Gamefaqs as was normal for clan wars at the time. This was not to be a normal clan war however. HM and RG both began impersonating members of the other clan in hopes of damaging reputations and causing infighting. While HM was in full swing bringing the fight to RG both on the game and on Gamefaqs, RG was holding back at the request of it's leader. Some in RG believed that the clan was above clan wars and that HM was just a fad of some kind. This proved not to be the case as HM continued to gain more and more momentum. It was then that RG proposed peace with HM. HM agreed but tension was still evident. A short time later the war erupted again over the same argument. It was clear to members in both clans that this was less and less about power and more about ego's. Around this time, the RG site was taken down by an unknown assailant. This disrupted RG and forced the clan to hold off and regroup. The mini rg's were dispersed and some became full RG's while other went their own ways. It is generally believed that HM came out the winner of this confrontation due to the inaction of RG and an uneasy peace was made again. It came just in time as RG was about to be rocked down to its very foundations.
With the introduction of instant messaging clients like YIM, RG's began to communicate more often. This led to great friendships being formed but also caused great strife within the clan. It was then in early April, 2005 that the RG leader Y2Jeremy stepped down from leadership and left the clan. He named an RG known as Rein Engel to become the new leader. Y2Jeremy then went off to form V.O.L.T.A.G.E. and faded from RG history. Even though Rein Engel was named leader, other members felt that he was not the right choice. Rein had the majority of the members behind him however and was supported as leader. RG was rocked again by the defection of several members from its ranks. One of the members erased the the third RG site which disrupted the communications between members. While Rein and those loyal to him scrambled to contact all the RG members, those who were forced out of RG during the changeover began telling confused and disconnected members that RG was dead and that they should go to other clans. They also attempted to incite HM to fight RG again. Ultimately HM decided to stay out of it and go their own way. RG began to immediately rebuild. A new site was established and many members were retained. The roster was kept small and manageable. The rules were clarified and enforced. The biggest change was that RG was to become more reclusive. It was decided that RG would remain in the background while rebuilding and that its members would simply improve themselves without the drama or clan wars.
It was shortly after this time that several strong players from HM broke away and formed a new clan called “ENVY”. With HM weakened, people in HM and outside HM began to step forward with accusations of cheat device use and cheap tactics. RG having been victim to those very cheat devices at a previous clan tournament stepped out of the shadows and voiced its opinion to the online world. So started another RG/HM war. This was not just RG and HM however, many clans were included in this. While a good many matches were had on the game over this, the thought of cheat devices made some players wary of fighting each other. This war was fought mostly on the boards across Gamefaqs and various clan sites. With no proof other then "hearsay" being offered by either side and challenges being made and declined by both sides, it was clear that the war was pointless. Rein Engel made peace with HM leader who had asked to end it all and so took RG out of the picture. RG was getting noticed again and with the ENVY season starting up, RG members started coming back on the game more often. Things were starting to look up again.
Peace never lasts and so in early June, 2005 people saw a post on the HM site about the HM leader admitting to using a cheat device. RG felt betrayed and canceled the peace with HM. So began yet another war with HM. It wasn't so much a war with HM as it was with the HM leader as he was the one who was accused of using the cheat device. Flame wars erupted again and still nothing much was achieved. This war never ended and still continues today. However, ENVY and RG came to have a mutual respect for one another and that tie remained for some time.
A short time before '06 came out in November, in the later half of October, 2005 there was another multi clan tournament held by XVM. RG lost due to the dishonesty of a substitute RG that was brought in to replace one of the original members in the tourney. That member was then fired for his actions and he declared war on us. Though after losing several matches in a row to various RG's, he left and was never heard from again. HM cheated their way to another victory since RG was knocked out early. This would be the last hoorah for HM.
Things died down enough for RG to institute new and improved rules to insure the cleanest and most skillful level of play for its members to achieve yet. Rein Engel wanted to emphasize good games over fast games. RG's rallied around the idea and upped their level of play again. RG also began to have the problems that all the players online were having. The game had been out for nearly a year and people were simply tired of playing. Over half of RG was on the sidelines and so RG faded again from the online world as did many other clans. Then came SD vs Raw 2006 in late November. Rein had been planning for a while to bring RG back to the limelight that it enjoyed back in the day. As '06 got into full swing, cheapness and lameness became worse then ever due to the addition of win/loss records on the game. Eventually fair players were being drowned in a wave of cheapness. Even on Gamefaqs, fair players were being shouted down by cheapers determined to fool people into believing that lameness was ok. What was worse was that former fair players were adopting cheapness in their gameplay to keep their records up. Rein Engel made the RG rules even stricter to accommodate the cheapness of the new game online. RG members returned to Gamefaqs with widely recognized lists for both good and bad players online. Some in RG began to hunt and report any and all cheapers online. Most of the members made the transition to the new game very well and began to once again set the standard for how a clean, skilled game is played. RG was regaining the momentum that it had lost over the past half year. Players online were recognizing the RG tags again and that only made RG try harder to become the cleanest clan online.
With a new game came the same problems and a few new ones. RG was still at odds with HM but enjoying close ties with ENVY who still shared many of the same ideals with us. Some new members were brought into RG which also broadened our horizons to new ways of playing. The first RG movie was released to great acclaim and RG tried to launch it's own "caws" only season but interest was low and the season was disbanded. RG watched HM go through several leader changes and then collapse from widespread paranoia and desertions. They never recovered. Ego's were another problem. Players that had been around for over a year now were clashing with other veterans of the game. These tiny flame wars sometimes became big enough to make tense relations between even friendly clans but for the most part things where relatively quiet. As RG stood while yet another rival clan fell, a member from ENVY came over with an idea for a new season. Thus the TNA season was born in early March 2006. This season was based mostly around caws of TNA wrestlers. It was headed up by Rein Engel and a former RG named SirWaffle.
That leads us up the Vegas tournament. This was another multi clan tourney hosted by an EnVy member of the same name. The design was to have a round of singles matches against different clan members, then a round of tag matches and ending with battle royals. HM was in ruins and did not enter. Without HM. the tourney was now on a level playing field since the HM leader would not be there with his cheat device. Here in RG we worked on our teamwork and practiced hard. We knew that in a fair contest we would do very well. As the first rounds played out, it was clear that RG was running away with the lead with many of our members clean sweeping the competition. RG went 13-1 in the opening round. This strong showing by RG made the other clans uneasy. RG was suddenly hit with accusations of shady tactics and having members pose in other clans to give ourselves free wins. Our members were shocked at this almost decided to pull out of the tourney. As it was, the flame wars that resulted caused the person running the tourney to eject RG from the competition. This severely strained the good relations between RG and ENVY. Both sides felt betrayed. The tourney was abruptly ended shortly after.
This marked the start of a time that some coined "RG vs the World". It seemed that no matter where we went, we were under attack with hate. On Gamefaqs the newest generation of cheapers were flaming us non stop for being fair while claiming to be fair themselves once again. No matter how many videos we provided that proved their cheapness, they ignored the proof and continued to flame us. On the sites of the other clans, we were under constant scrutiny. RG members were shouted down whenever they posted, no matter what they posted. We simply took it in stride and weathered the storm. It was then that accusations started to arise about RG members posing as members of other clans yet again. This time it was brought up from the HM leader who was back and making a futile attempt to bring life to his dead clan by rekindling the HM/RG wars. His accusations were debunked and he disappeared again but it would only be a few weeks later that a member of the XVM clan would start it all back up once more.
Before that started up again however, RG was just moving right along. Fired up from the clans success at the tourney, the RG title for '06 was made and a tournament was held to establish a champion. The TNA season was moved to it's own site. Once the rumors of posing, cheating in the tournaments and spying started up again, relations with the ENVY clan were strained almost to the breaking point. Arguments erupted on both sites and even though proof was offered that exonerated the RG members accused, it was too late to help any. In the coming months, members of ENVY and RG clashed on the game and on the boards. In the mean time, RG was having some infighting problems over the RG title and other problems with outlandish accusations from random people on Gamefaqs once again.
The infighting was settled as everyone began getting ready for SvR '07. Things between RG and ENVY were getting worse and the HM leader tried to provoke RG once or twice but for the most part people were looking forward to '07 with mixed feelings about the game. Rein Engel revised the RG rules once again. Some members of RG were given hidden info off the ENVY clan site which caused most of the RG's to cease associating with ENVY members. After the demo of '07 was released, things died down a little while those that had it reported what they thought about it. Some didn't mind the changes that were introduced and some nearly refused to buy the game at all. Some of the changes were going to have definite effects on clans themselves. Even though we were trying to play it cool, a cycle developed that led all the way up to the next game. EnVy members would talk about RG in their private board, we would catch wind of it, arguments ensued, accusations of hacking would arise and bad feelings would grow. Throw in the HM leader seeding more drama and you have the closing weeks of '06.
To be continued with RG in '07......
